Foster City, California
This two-story steel framed office and laboratory building with annex auditorium is intended to be the first of several new Gilead state of the art research and development facilities on their Foster City campus. Located on an existing building site the new building is founded on auger cast piles to a depth of 120 feet below the bay mud. A supported ground-floor slab and special concentric braced frames are part of the foundation and seismic lateral force resisting system. The building, which has a 100’ x 300’ footprint, is comprised of a central lobby and core area and is divided into eight control areas due to the H-occupancy requirements. A highly efficient braced frame system minimizes the number of frames to a total of four in each building grid direction. Studies were performed to identify the most efficient framing systems and column locations to maximize vibration sensitivity below labs and separate potential excessive vibration generation below adjacent office areas.

Research and Development Buildings
South San Francisco, California
Two 3-story special concentrically steel braced frame R&D buildings sitting above a concrete shear wall parking garage supported by precast, prestressed concrete piles. The East building totals 72,393sf and the West building totals 85,287sf for a combined square footage of 157,680sf. The structural steel frame system for these buildings, which will be constructed as a "cold" shell with certain "warm-up" elements, has been designed for cost efficiency and suitability to the user functions of the bio-tech tenants. The buildings are clad with GFRC panels.

Block 43, Parcel 5
San Francisco, California
This six-story office and laboratory building displays a dramatic architectural design, supported by thorough engineering. Pile foundations, a supported ground-floor slab, and eccentrically braced frames are part of the engineering design. The building, which is a cold shell with certain “warm-up” elements, nevertheless is being designed for cost efficiency. Studies were performed to identify the most efficient framing and bracing solutions considering structural cost in conjunction with architectural and mechanical-engineering considerations.
